St. John of the Cross... have you read that book "Dark Night of the Soul?"
yes Bekah but though it's night yet in Hosea He says that He will allure you into the wilderness and speak tenderly to your heart... such a comforting thought... there is purpose even at 3 am ;)

I haven't read the book, and I wouldn't even begin to attempt a dissection of it, but I'm moved even by my shaky understanding of St. John's poem. I mean, listen to this:
"O guiding night!
O night more lovely than the dawn!
O night that has united
the Lover with his beloved,
transforming the beloved in her Lover."
The soul is brought into perfect union with God, and its through this "dark night" of contemplation. I could be totally off, but I see it as a celebration of the dark times (isolation, depression) in our life that bring us closer to God.
So, you're right! 3am does have purpose...but it still bites! haha
The reason I identify with Fitzgerald's quote more than the original work of St. John of the Cross is, first of all, because mystisicm is a false doctrine, but more because Fiztgerald captures so simply and so poignantly what it actually feels like to experience a "dark night." It feels like 3am, day after day, after day. I love that picture.
Hey where's that scripture in Hosea? I have't read that in a while. Thanks Katie, for always speaking the truth in love...you're awesome.
Hosea 2:14
